Chapter 21: Two Lines
Katja's POV
The test sat on the edge of the sink with two pink lines.
The four of them had the bath running before I had finished saying the word.
It was the first Saturday in May.
The claw-foot tub upstairs was the only thing in the house big enough.
The water came out of the old brass tap hot enough to steam the window.
Nobody said much.
Taras had cried first, loudly, into a towel.
Anders had sat down on the bathroom floor with his hands over his face.
Garnet had walked out of the room, come back in, and walked out again.
Finally he stood in the doorway holding a clean washcloth, and he did not seem to know why.
Abram had said my name once, very quietly, and then he had taken my hand and run the bath.
Now I lay in it.
I was naked, with my hair pinned up and my knees bent.
My four men knelt around the tub in their shorts with their sleeves rolled up.
"Close your eyes," Abram said.
I did.
He poured a cup of warm water over my shoulders, and then another.
His hands were slow and sure.
He soaped my back in wide circles, up my spine and out over my shoulder blades, and I sighed.
Taras took my left foot out of the water and put it in his lap.
He worked the soap between my toes, one at a time, and into the arch, with his thumbs.
"Those were frozen, once," he said. "Garnet fixed them. I'm the lucky one, I get to do the bubbles."
"You're the bubbles," Anders said, in a muffled voice, and Taras laughed.
Garnet had not spoken.
He reached over the rim and laid his hand on my belly, under the water, low and flat.
I put mine over his.
"It's real," I said.
"It's real," he said.
"I'm scared," I said.
"I know."
"I'm so happy I can't."
My voice cracked, and Anders made a small sound, and Abram's soapy hands came around the front of me and cupped my breasts.
The milk let down against his palms at once.
