Chapter 22: The Nursery Doorway
On Saturday night we unplugged the old monitor.
Jonas did it, because I asked him to.
He stood on the nursery rug in his socks and pulled the cord out of the wall, and the green light on the dresser went out.
"That's it?" he said.
"That's it."
"I thought it would feel like more."
I took the receiver off the dresser and carried it to the hall closet and set it in the empty box on the top shelf, next to my wedding photograph.
I did not throw it away.
I wanted it where I could see it on the way to the linen towels.
The new one went where the old one had been.
I had set it to a channel of my own, with a dial I'd read the manual for, in English, twice.
The baby slept through all of it, on her back with her fists beside her ears.
We stood in the nursery door and watched her chest go up and down.
"She looks like you when she's asleep," Jonas said, low.
"She looks like you."
"She has your gap," he said.
"She doesn't have teeth yet," I said.
"She will."
He kissed the side of my neck.
