Chapter 18: His Mother's Stage
The Piedmont Club ballroom had been dressed in white lilies and one enormous photograph of my mother.
It was the diner photo from her last good year, blown up to six feet tall, her hair in a net and her chin up.
Under it, a banner said THE ROSE BULLOCH HOSPICE FUND, in gold.
I stopped inside the double doors, and Rhona's hand closed around my wrist.
"Breathe," she said. "You knew."
"I knew they would use her. I didn't know they would use her face."
A hundred and fifty women in evening dress filled the round tables.
Mrs. Berrien stood on the stage in a champagne gown, with a microphone and the look of a woman receiving an award.
Camille sat at the head table in white, with an empty chair beside her.
The seat card on it read, MISS S. BULLOCH.
"They want me beside her," I said.
"Then you'll sit where you like," Rhona said.
We took a table near the front.
I had brought a guest.
The woman in the plain navy suit beside Rhona was gray-haired and soft-spoken, and she had run the hospice unit that cared for my mother.
