Talbot was on the bench outside the Fulton County detectives' office at ten to nine, in a suit that did not fit him anymore.
He had lost weight in a week.
His hands were folded between his knees, and he looked up when I sat down at the other end of the bench.
"You don't have to be here," he said.
"I'm the complainant. The detective asked me to come."
"Right."
We sat there with six feet of cracked vinyl between us.
A door opened, and a woman in her forties with a gray braid and a lanyard called his name.
"Mr. Berrien. Come in. Ms. Bulloch, you can come too, if he agrees."
"I agree," Talbot said.
The room had a steel table, a recorder, and a window onto a parking structure.
I set his mother's tablet on the table, where Rhona had kept it safe for three days.
The detective slid it into a clear bag without touching the screen.
"You understand that anything you say today will be sworn?" she said.
