Chapter 13: Page One

Jo's POV

"Page one," Ansel said. "That's what I can tell you. I don't know what you saw."

"Then I'll tell you what I remember."

I opened the folder.

The first thing in it was a photocopy of a witness line, and the J on it was mine.

I had made that loop since I was eleven.

"It was July," I said. "I was twenty-three, and I'd been in Roland's legal office for six weeks."

"He called me into his corner office on a Friday, with the door open and the air conditioning going."

"He put one sheet in front of me and said the insurer needed a witness, and it was routine."

"He held out his own pen."

Ansel stood perfectly still on the far side of the desk.

"I signed where he pointed," I said. "He said thank you, Joanna. He said I was a lifesaver."

"Then he took the page back, and I went to lunch."

I turned the cover sheet.

Page one was a single sheet of heavy cream paper with the company seal at the top and a short paragraph under it.

The footer said Page 1 of 4.

I read it twice.

Then I turned to the next sheet, and it was thin white copy paper, with a footer that said Page 2 of 9.

I turned to page three, and page four, and every one of them said of 9.

"The numbers don't match," I said.

"No."

"He gave me a four-page summary to witness. He took one page of it and attached it to nine."
