Chapter 24: The Hook by the Door
"I'm done at the yard," said Bram.
He said it to the whole dining room, but he was looking at me.
"I'm not going to stand behind a desk at that company. Not a day more."
He took a ring of keys out of his jacket, heavy brass and steel.
He walked down the table and set them in front of the man with the gray mustache.
"Dispatch is yours," he said. "Pauline says the state will name somebody to keep the lights on. I'd rather it was someone who drove."
The man looked at the keys, and at the room, and nodded slowly.
"We'll keep the number," he said. "The one on the trucks. We'll answer it every time."
Fern blew her nose into a napkin.
Pauline looked out the window with her mouth pressed flat.
Then Bram turned back to me.
"There's a job on Butler Street," he said.
"A bay in a garage, two lifts, a landlord who doesn't care who my brother is. I start in January."
"That's a real job."
"It's one I picked."
"I like it."
"I live in a boathouse that belongs to my aunt," he said. "I can stay there."
"Or I can ask you something. You can say no, and it's still yes to everything else."
I looked at Fern, who was pretending very hard to study the ceiling.
I looked at the room full of people, and at the dog under the table with his chin on my shoe.
