Chapter 15: Not His Mate

Cade stared at her skirts as they swept past his hand.

"Odette," he said again. "You told me we were fated."

"I told you a lot of things," Odette said, and did not look down at him.

"You said you felt the bond the first time I touched you. You said it burned."

"You were the Alpha then," she said. "Of course it burned."

A low sound went around the hall, and it was not a growl.

It was three hundred wolves understanding something at the same moment.

The eldest elder tapped her cane.

"Alpha-that-was," she said. "A fated bond leaves a mark on the collarbone of both. Show us hers."

Cade said nothing.

"Show us, Odette Appleton."

"I don't have to," said Odette, shrill. "The mark comes later with some pairs. It's well known."

"It is not well known," said the stout cook. "I've been married thirty years and it came the first night."

She marched up to Odette, took hold of the lace collar of the pale gown and pulled it down off one shoulder.

Odette's collarbone was bare and smooth.

She slapped the cook's hand away, but the whole hall had seen.

"Say it," I said.

Odette turned and saw me standing a few steps off with Soren beside me.

Her lovely blue eyes filled with tears.

"Rhi," she said. "Rhi, please. You know me. I was always good to you."

"You were my assistant for two years."

"I was your friend."

"My friend would not have sold the food my pack was starving for."

"I only did what he told me!" Odette cried, and she flung out a hand at Cade. "It was his plan from the start. He said if everyone believed in a fated bond, the elders couldn't blame him for the Luna."

Cade's head came up.

"That is a lie," he said hoarsely.

"He said it was easier than telling you the truth, Rhi. That he was bored of you, and that you were too good."
