Chapter 30: One Minute at the Gate
I didn't go to June at the fairground.
I walked past her to the oldest wife and took Maggie out of her arms.
June's face moved, but she stayed where she was.
"Not here," I said. "Not with all of them looking."
"Where?"
"Your gate. Tomorrow at ten."
She nodded.
She was crying, and she did not wipe it away.
I drove out to the farm the next morning in Rafe's truck with Maggie asleep in her car seat.
The road ran past the fields I had walked as a bride, and the orchard where June had taught me to can peaches.
The gate at the end of the lane was white and sagging on its hinges.
Rafe stopped the truck short of it.
"You want me to come?"
"No."
"I'll be here."
"I know. That's why I can do it."
I took Maggie out in the sling, and her head rested against my chest.
I walked the last fifty feet and stopped at the gate, and I did not open it.
I knew exactly where I was standing.
Fifteen years ago, a man with a ring in his pocket had stood on this spot for an hour.
June came down the lane in her barn coat.
She stopped on the other side of the bars.
She had no purse, no pie and no casserole.
She was not holding a glass of water.
"I thought about bringing you something," she said. "Then I thought about what I brought him."
"I'm glad you didn't."
"Annie, I'm not going to make a speech."
"Good."
"I stood at that stove and heard my son lie, and I let him. I told myself you needed a marriage more than you needed the truth. I told myself it was kindness."
Her hands were on the top rail, the knuckles big and cracked.
