Chapter 15: Witness

The sheriff's station was a low brick building behind the courthouse, and it smelled of floor wax and old coffee.

I had called the clinic from Ginny's porch at seven.

My boss had said, "Take the day," before I'd finished the sentence, and then, "Whatever you did, the waiting room's been talking about it since Saturday."

Now I sat on a plastic chair beside Bree with a paper cup of vending machine cocoa.

She had put on the same hoodie and leggings.

She kept pulling the sleeves down over her hands.

"You don't have to stay," she said.

"I'm staying."

"You hate me."

"I don't." I said it as plainly as I could. "I hated you for about four seconds at the cake. Then I saw your face."

"What was wrong with my face?"

"You were looking at the ring like you'd just found out it was borrowed."

Bree made a small wet noise that was almost a laugh.

The deputy opened the door of the interview room and held it.

She was a tall woman in her forties with a long braid and tired eyes.

"Ms. Lacey," she said. "And you're Mrs. Donohue."

"Prescott," I said, automatically.

"For now," said the deputy, without a trace of a smile, and then she did smile. "Come in. Both of you."

It was a small gray room with a table and a recorder.

Bree sat with her list flat in front of her and her hands in her lap.

"Start at the beginning," the deputy said.

"He said I was holding it for him," said Bree.

"Holding what?"

"Cash. In March. A zippered bag from the bar, for the boys' fund." She looked at the table. "He said Cade liked to keep it off the books so nobody could take it in a lawsuit. He made it sound like a favor to the club."
