Chapter 29: The Second Line
Willa's POV
I did not tell him in the garage.
I made him sit on the stool.
I stood in front of him with my back to the closed door, and for a full minute I could not say it.
"Is it the name?" he said. "Rory's name?"
"No."
"Did he say something to you?"
"Cade," I said.
"Did you quit the clinic?"
"I'm pregnant," I said.
He did not move.
He sat on the stool with a socket wrench in one hand and his mouth open.
The radio went on playing something with a steel guitar.
"I took two tests," I said. "The second one this morning, in the bathroom at work. I made an appointment for Friday, but I already know."
"Pregnant."
"About seven weeks, I think."
He put the wrench down on the bench and missed the bench.
It rang on the concrete.
He got off the stool and stood in front of me.
He put his hand up as if to touch my face and stopped it in the air.
"I'm scared," he said.
I had expected a lot of things.
That was not one.
"The coast road," he said, hoarse. "My mother died having Rory. Did I ever tell you that? Not on a road. In a hospital bed, forty minutes from anywhere. I was four. Ginny raised us after." He stopped. "I'm scared, Willa. I'm sorry. I'm so happy and I'm so scared I can't feel my hands."
I took them.
They were cold.
"Me too," I said. "Both of those."
He laughed, and his eyes were wet, and he pulled me in against his chest so hard my feet nearly left the floor.
He put his face in my hair.
"Don't tell anyone," I said into his shirt. "Not yet. Not Ginny, not Rory. Twelve weeks. I want it to be ours for a while before it's the club's."
