Chapter 4: The Room

"Ginny told me," Cade said.

He still wasn't looking at me.

"Ginny brings her cat to your clinic every first Friday," he said. "She says you drink mint tea and talk to the cat like it's a person."

That was true, and I knew it was true.

It was also not the whole answer, and I could tell.

"You bought my tea," I said. "You painted a room."

"Yes."

"You had a table set up with rings on it."

"Yes."

"Before tonight."

He rubbed the scar through his eyebrow with one thumb.

"Since Wednesday," he said. "I meant to ask you tomorrow. In daylight, with nobody watching. Then Travis told the whole club to come see his surprise, and tonight was the night."

"You meant to ask me to marry you."

"I meant to ask you something. I never got that far."

I put both hands flat on the counter so he couldn't see them shaking.

"Do you know what my grandmother used to tell me?" I said. "Edie lost her house once. She signed a paper a man gave her and never read it."

He said nothing.

"Read before you sign. That was the only rule she ever made me keep."

"I know."

"No. You don't." I stepped around the counter. "You put a pen in my hand and covered the page with your palm. You took the one thing I would never give anybody. You took it in front of forty people while Travis laughed."
