Chapter 18: Fourteen Hands
Camille was the first to find her voice.
"Geoffrey is not himself," she told the directors. "He hasn't slept. I move that this board set aside his statement."
Nobody seconded.
The older executive by the window stood up with his legal pad.
"I took notes this morning in this room," he said. "Ms. Dacre, in front of me and Brandt's counsel, said she had known for eight months that Mr. Willoughby was not of the blood. She said she was paid a fee of forty million dollars if this sale closed."
A sound went through the gallery.
He turned to Brandt's side of the table.
"I'd like to know whether Brandt Capital knew its fee was going to an officer of the company it was buying."
The gray-haired woman looked at her thin lawyer.
He had stopped moving.
"Did you know?" she asked him, quietly.
"It was a standard introducer arrangement."
"With a woman who forged the title?"
"I had no knowledge of the title."
"You had her bank details," the woman said.
She stood and gathered her own folder.
"Brandt withdraws its offer," she said to the room. "We do not buy land with a title dispute, and we do not pay finders in secret. Geoffrey, I'm sorry for the waste of your afternoon. Our counsel will be in touch with the district attorney's office."
The thin lawyer stood up too, and she did not look at him.
They went out together without a word, and the door closed on them.
Camille watched them leave.
"You can't remove me," she said to Geoffrey. "I hold a director's proxy for the Dacre trust."
