Chapter 21: What He Held
Wendell held his phone up and turned in a slow half circle.
"Four hundred of you," he said. "Four hundred, and not one has heard what your Head says when she thinks the cameras are off."
"I have it recorded. Saturday, November fifteenth, in the parking lot."
My stomach turned over.
His lawyer was standing by the wall with his hands clasped, very pale.
He had followed us out into the snow that night, I realized.
He had stood at the top of the steps with a phone in his coat.
Wendell touched the screen.
My own voice filled the gym.
It was small and wet and thin, played through a speaker meant for a ringtone.
I heard myself say it again, tinny and small, and I watched four hundred faces take it in.
"Not your money. Your name."
The room gasped like one body.
Wendell stopped it with a flourish.
"She confesses it in her own words," he said. "She picked the janitor for who he was."
