Chapter 14: Fifteen Minutes in Court
The family courtroom on the fourth floor had a low ceiling and a carpet the color of old tea.
It held a row of chairs, a flag, and a judge with reading glasses on a beaded chain.
Nolan sat on my left.
His lawyer sat on my right, a gray woman with a legal pad who had said exactly nine words to me.
Across the aisle sat my father in his church clothes, with a lawyer in a navy suit whose cufflinks were stamped with a small R.
My stepmother was not there.
I noticed that, and I put it away to think about later.
"This is an emergency petition," the judge said. "Counsel, you have five minutes."
The navy suit stood up.
"Your Honor, my clients are the maternal grandparents of a four-year-old child. The mother is unfit. She has no employment, she has lived in a vehicle, and she has married a man she met last week for the purpose of keeping the boy."
"I have been working since I was fifteen," I said.
"Ms. Maslowski, you'll have your turn," the judge said, not unkindly.
