Chapter 7: Grilled Cheese

Winifred left at midnight, after she had told me everything she knew.

She hadn't asked me to forgive her, and she had gone out into the cold without her cane.

I did not sleep.

At two in the morning I went down to the kitchen in my borrowed robe, and found the light on.

Nolan stood at the stove in a gray T-shirt and sweatpants, scowling at a pan.

"I'm burning a grilled cheese," he said.

"I can see that."

"I've never made one. We had a cook."

"Give me the spatula."

"I can do it."

"Nolan. It's on fire."

He stepped back, and I pulled the pan off the burner and flipped the sandwich.

It was black on one side and raw on the other.

I scraped it onto a plate anyway and ate it standing up, because I hadn't eaten since the lab.

He watched me, and the kitchen got very small.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I'm not going to dress it up. I'm sorry for every day."

"You didn't know."

"I should have looked harder. I called a number with one digit missing, and then I stopped."

"You were twenty-eight. You were afraid, I think. I would have been too."

"I wasn't afraid of you." He leaned back against the counter, arms crossed. "I thought about you every day for a year. I used to walk through that ballroom hoping a girl would drop a dessert cart."

I put the plate down.

My pulse was doing something stupid.

"You remember the cart?"

"I remember everything. You laughed with your whole face. You told me you'd been up since five, and you didn't care, and you wanted to eat the whole cake with a spoon."
