Chapter 17: The Board Room
The Halsted boardroom had a long glass wall that looked out over the lake.
Nine people in dark clothes sat around the table.
Dieter sat at the head of it, with a carafe of water and a leather folder, the chairman of everything.
I stood in the doorway in my mother's navy coat with Matthias on my left and Ania on my right.
She had refused the wheelchair.
She leaned on her cane with her green hat pulled low and her chin up.
"Mrs. Reinhardt," said Dieter. "I did say to bring the wife. I didn't say the patient."
"I'm the line item," said Ania. "I thought I'd attend."
Somebody at the table smothered a cough.
The hospital's president sat on Dieter's left, a heavy man in a grey suit.
Beside him was the oncologist with the grey in her braid, who gave me one tiny nod.
"Let's begin," Dieter said, and opened the folder.
"On October fifteenth, four hundred and eighty thousand dollars left the Reinhardt Freight finance office for this hospital."
"It was approved by one man, the chief executive, for one patient, his employee's sister."
