Chapter 22: Torn Up
On the fourteenth of January we lit the big stone fireplace in the living room on Lake Drive.
Snow fell outside the glass wall, and the lake behind it was black and slow.
Ania lay on the sofa under three blankets, and her hair was coming back in, a soft dark fuzz under her hat.
Oma sat in the armchair with her tea.
Matthias stood by the fire with his hands in his pockets, and he looked like a man waiting for a verdict.
I had the folder.
I'd carried it in from his office myself, the forty pages he had slid across a desk to me in October.
"Do I get a speech?" said Ania.
"No."
"I'd like a speech. I drew a speech."
She held up her sketchbook.
It showed me, enormous, tearing a book in half with my teeth while a small man in a suit cheered.
"That's not how it goes," I said.
"It's how it will go in the comic."
I opened the folder on my knee.
The top page said Agreement, and my signature was at the bottom, a little crooked, from the night I'd been shaking.
I tore it in half.
It made a long, satisfying rip.
I threw the pieces into the fire, and they curled and went gold.
