Chapter 16: Sybil Walks

Marchetti's had a private room at the back, with red walls, a long table and five people already eating.

Dorian sat at the head with his gold watch on the white cloth.

Four members of the Foundation board sat along the sides, with wine in front of them and napkins in their laps.

Sybil sat at Dorian's right hand, in the camel coat, with her back very straight.

Pippa came in beside me wearing an orange dress that could have stopped traffic.

"Loud," she whispered. "As ordered."

Dorian saw us and put his fork down.

"This is a private dinner," he said.

"I invited them," Sybil said.

Every head turned.

She had not raised her voice, and I do not think anyone at that table had heard her volunteer a sentence in years.

"Sybil," Dorian said, with a smile for the room. "Darling, you're not well."

"Sit, please, both of you," Sybil said to us. "There are two chairs by the door."

We sat.

Pippa took a breadstick like a weapon.

"Dorian has spent this evening telling you that my cousin's fiancee is a fraud," Sybil said, to the four board members.
