Chapter 7: The Ladies' Room

The Children's Science Fund luncheon was held in a ballroom with three hundred people and one photographer for every ten of them.

Rhys put his hand at the small of my back as we walked in, and every camera turned.

"Smile," he murmured. "You're in love."

"I'm in a dress that cost more than my car," I said.

"You look like you're about to bite someone."

"Give me a minute."

He laughed, and the flashes went off.

Our table was at the front, between a hedge fund founder and a woman in a hat the size of a pizza.

Rhys pulled my chair out, sat beside me, and put his hand on my knee under the tablecloth.

"Careful," I said into my water glass.

"I'm playing the part."

"The part doesn't need your hand that high."

"Doesn't it?" he said.

His fingers moved an inch up my thigh.

My fork stopped halfway to my mouth.

The woman in the hat leaned across.

"Mamie, isn't it?" she said. "When is the wedding?"

I opened my mouth with no idea what was about to come out.

"We haven't set a date," Rhys said smoothly.

"We're waiting until the gala," I said, at the same moment.

We looked at each other.

"Both," Rhys said. "We're waiting for the gala, and we haven't set a date."

"How romantic," the woman said.

"He's a very patient man," I said.

"I'm a man who knows what he wants," Rhys said, and kissed my temple.

My whole body flushed.

I excused myself to find the ladies' room before my face gave me away.
