Chapter 9: Pippa

Pippa found out from a newspaper.

I know because she threw it at Rhys's head.

It was Tuesday morning, a week after the boardroom.

I was in Rhys's office on the thirtieth floor, signing the last page of the paperwork for the quarter's money.

The door banged open.

Pippa stood there in her lab coat, with red curls going in every direction and a folded Tribune in her fist.

HALLOWAY'S SECRET FIANCEE, said the headline, over a photo of me with my mouth open at the luncheon.

"Mame," she said.

"Pip, I can explain."

"You can explain?"

She waved the paper.

"I found out you're engaged to a billionaire on the T, standing up, between two men eating egg sandwiches."

"I was going to call."

"You texted me 'busy, all fine.' For seven days."

"It was a long week."

She turned on Rhys, who had stood up behind the desk and was holding very still.

"And you," she said. "You're the man who pays for my reagents."

"I'm the man who is trying to," Rhys said.

"Are you sleeping with my sister?"

I closed my eyes.

"Pippa," I said.

"It's a fair question."

"I'll answer it," Rhys said. "Yes."

My eyes flew open.

"Excuse me?" Pippa said.

"We are," Rhys said evenly. "And I want to tell you the rest, if you'll let me, before you throw anything else."

She dropped the paper.

"Talk."

He told her everything.

He said it plainly, with no softening, standing behind his desk with his hands at his sides.
