Chapter 18: Night Class

The last of the night class left at nine.

Frank left a minute later with his keys held up over his head.

"Lock the front," he called over his shoulder. "I'm not here. I never was."

I locked the front.

Cal stood in the bag room doorway with a towel around his neck, still in his sweats from the class.

The room smelled of rubber and chalk and the lemon cleaner.

Six heavy bags hung from the beams in the half dark.

The long mirror on the far wall held the two of us in gray.

I shut the door and turned the lock.

"Come here," I said.

He came.

I took the towel from his neck and dropped it.

Then I put both palms on his chest and walked him backward until his shoulders met the nearest bag.

It swung away from him and swung back and bumped him in the spine, and he laughed once, low.

"I thought this was closing up," he said.

"It is. I'm closing you."

I pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it on the stool.

I kissed his chest, his throat, the hollow below his ear.

He had stopped waiting for orders weeks ago.

His hands were in my hair, and then at the hem of my tank top.

Then he had it over my head and was looking at me in the mirror.

"Look," he said.

I looked.

A tall woman with a boxer's shoulders and a flushed face, held from behind by a man whose eyes were black.
