Chapter 10: Simone
"I'm sorry," Simone said. "I know it's nine o'clock. I know you don't know me."
"Come up," I said. "It's freezing."
She followed me up the stairs holding the bakery box in front of her.
In my apartment she stood in the middle of the room and looked at the dishes, the laundry.
The bike in the hall.
"Oh, thank god," she said.
"What?"
"I thought you'd be perfect."
I laughed, helplessly, and the laugh broke something loose in her.
She laughed too, with tears on her face, and sat on my green couch with the box on her knees.
I put the kettle on.
I found two clean mugs, one with a chip, and handed her the good one.
She held it in both hands.
"The box is for you," she said. "It's a lemon tart. I made it at four this morning because I couldn't sleep."
"You don't have to bribe me."
"It's not a bribe. It's an apology."
"For what?"
"For the quiz."
I sat down on the other end of the couch.
Simone looked at the steam.
"I took it in June," she said. "At the bakery, at four in the morning, between batches, with flour on the phone. It asked what I do on a perfect Sunday. I said hike. I haven't hiked in six years."
"Do you own hiking boots?" I asked.
"Kitchen clogs," she said.
"I answered like someone a billionaire would want." She breathed out. "Then they called me and said I was a ninety-nine, and it was the happiest I had been in a year, Daria. Because I thought, oh. Maybe that's me. Maybe I do hike."
