Chapter 8: Mount Washington

Winston drove a gray Volvo wagon.

It was eleven years old, and it had a cracked cup holder and a dent in the back door.

He took me the long way.

He drove across the Liberty Bridge, up the hill.

Along Grandview Avenue, where the whole city lay below the cliff in lights.

He parked at a pull-off at the end of a row of benches.

There was nobody else there, only a cold wind and the three rivers and the glittering triangle of Downtown.

He turned the engine off.

I answered Simone's text before I lost my nerve.

Friday night, my place. Will that work?

Her answer came in a second.

Yes. Thank you.

I put the phone in the cup holder.

"Okay?" Winston said.

"Okay."

We sat for a minute in the quiet.

The windows began to fog.

"I never did this," he said. "Even in college."

"Park somewhere and look at lights?"

"I had a library carrel."

I laughed.

I looked at the back seat, and at his hands on the wheel.

At the long line of his thigh.

"Get in the back," I said.

He turned his head very slowly.

"In the back?"

"Now."

He climbed over the console with no grace at all.

He hit his head on the roof, said a quiet word, and landed on the seat.

I followed him over.

I knelt across his lap with my knees on the cloth seat and my head bent under the ceiling.

It was cramped and cold and smelled like old coffee.

I had never wanted anything more.

"Take your coat off," I said.

"It's thirty-eight degrees."

"I'll warm you up."

He took off his coat.

I took off my hoodie, and under it my shirt.

The cold air hit my skin and tightened me everywhere.

He put his hands over my breasts to warm them.

His palms were hot.

I gasped and arched.

"Your hands," I said.

"I could use them elsewhere."

"Elsewhere is coming."

I kissed him, with my glasses knocking against his face.
