Chapter 17: Thirty-Three Weeks
The hospital in Lake Geneva was small, with one maternity hall and a nurse who called everyone sweetheart.
She strapped two belts around my belly, one for the heartbeat and one for the squeezing.
Then she left me with a paper cup of ice.
Torben sat in a plastic chair that had been built for a child.
His knees came up nearly to his chest.
"You can stand," I said.
"I'm fine."
"You look like a man waiting in a school office."
"I've been called to worse school offices."
I tried to laugh, and the band across my belly tightened again, and the paper on the monitor scrolled out a hill.
He was on his feet before the hill peaked.
"Breathe," he said. "Out slowly. With me."
I breathed with him, in and out, and he kept his eyes on mine and not on the machine.
The hill fell away.
