Chapter 13: What I Paid
"Say that again," Ra-on said.
"I hired you."
Ra-on opened his hand, and the whole ring lay in it, green and cold.
"You sat across a table from a paper-seller and paid five hundred gold to have yourself killed in your sleep."
"Yes."
"You left the gate unbarred."
"Yes."
"You wrote the will."
"Yes."
"You let me wash your back at the well, and you knew there was a pin in my hair."
"I knew there was something," said Ryeo-won.
"I didn't know it was that."
"I thought it was a thief's trick, and then I stopped thinking, because you were laughing at my jokes."
Ra-on laughed.
It came out of him, torn.
"Why?" he said.
Ryeo-won sat down on the floor in front of him with his naked knees drawn up.
For the first time since Ra-on had known him, he looked his age, and then older.
"The Alliance gave me this villa," he said.
"When I came home from Moonrise Pass with no eyes, the Chief called it a reward."
"A reward from the Chief has a condition."
"The land is mine for as long as I live, and it passes to Dong-ju only if I die in service."
