Chapter 15: Anger
Ra-on did not sleep.
He lay in the loft under the rafters with the whole ring in his fist and watched the plum branches scratch at the window.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw a rope in a bamboo grove.
A rope in Ryeo-won's long brown hands.
Ryeo-won's face tipped up and smiling a little.
At the second watch Ra-on got up.
He went down the ladder barefoot and across the dark yard to Ryeo-won's door.
It was open.
It was always open.
Ryeo-won sat on the edge of the bed that had never been slept in, fully dressed, with his hands on his knees.
"I wondered when," he said.
"I've been listening to you not sleep for three hours."
"Shut up."
"All right."
"You don't get to be calm."
"I'm not calm."
"You're being calm at me."
"I'm trying."
"Don't."
Ra-on shut the door behind him.
It was the first time he had ever shut it, and the latch fell with a small clean sound.
Ryeo-won's head turned.
"Ra-on?"
"You made me love a dead man," Ra-on said.
His voice shook so badly that the words came out in pieces.
"You were dead before I got here, and you let me fall in love with a dead man."
"You let me hold you at night and thought, he'll be sorry in a month."
