Chapter 19: Seongju

Seongju smelled of river mud and frying oil, and the Gray Heron Hall stood in the middle of it.

Ra-on had forgotten how big it was.

It had four courtyards, a roof of grey tile with a bronze heron on every ridge, and a gate that opened only inward.

They stopped across the street, in the shade of a noodle stall.

"Describe it," said Ryeo-won.

"Grey," Ra-on said.

"A wall twice a man's height."

"Two guards in straw hats."

"A boy sweeping the step who used to carry my washing."

"Does he see you?"

"Not yet."

"Good."

"Then we'll find an inn that doesn't."

Dong-ju was staring at everything with his mouth open, a country boy in a city at last.

He had a pastry in each hand and no memory of buying either.

"It's enormous," he whispered.

"It's where the debts live," Ra-on said.

They took two rooms at the back of a river inn run by a deaf widow who wanted only their coin.

She put Dong-ju in the small one next door, with a basin and a window on the water.

He was asleep in a quarter of an hour, with the sword across his chest and a crumb on his chin.

The other room had a lamp, a low bed, and a screen painted with cranes.

Ryeo-won touched the screen.

He ran his hand over the painted birds, one by one.
