Chapter 20: The Lantern Court
The Lantern Court sat in a round cellar under the main house, with two hundred lanterns hanging from its ceiling.
They hung on cords in rings, white paper over candles, so that the whole room swam in a warm pale light.
Tiered benches ran around the walls.
On them sat nine people in white masks, each with a lantern on a stick beside them.
These were the Hall's clients.
They wore silk and sat very still.
Opposite the stair, at the foot of a low dais, stood Madam Gwak in her best brown.
Her rings were laid out on a cloth in front of her, in a row.
On either side of the cellar, against the wall, stood thirty assassins in bird masks.
Ra-on knew them.
There were the twins who had shared his first dormitory, the cook's nephew, and the old woman who had taught him to throw.
None of them looked at him.
He walked down the stairs between Dong-ju and Ryeo-won with the ring in his fist.
Ryeo-won had put on a clean hemp robe and tied back his hair.
He walked into that room with his staff tapping, straight-backed, without a stumble, and a murmur ran around the benches.
"The Crane of Haeram," somebody whispered.
"He's blind."
