Chapter 16: Odette's Choice

Odette did not look up when I came into the infirmary.

She sat on the edge of the narrow bed in my tall, tired body, with the blanket in her fists.

The old woman who ran the room stood by the window with her arms crossed.

The witch stood in the doorway, because she had been told not to come any further.

"Say it again," I said to the witch. "All of it. In front of her."

"The river stone takes a soul home if both souls want it and it is moonrise," the witch said. "Tonight, then, if she wants it."

"And if she doesn't?"

"She has a week."

"And if she does?"

The witch looked at Odette, and then, for the first time, away.

"A soul with no wolf has no roots. It will come loose easily. But nothing holds it on the other side either, and some do not land."

"Some," Odette said.

"One in three do not land."

The old woman by the window said nothing, which was an answer.

Odette's thumb moved on the blanket.

"What did Jasper's way cost?" she said.

"Valerie's wolf cut out of her and put in you. You'd have lived, and she wouldn't have been the same."

"Then I won't take it," Odette said.

She said it flatly.

"You'd be dead in a week," I said.

"I'll take the stone. I'd rather risk dying as myself than live on your wolf." She looked up. "It isn't much of a choice. It's the only one I can stand."
