Chapter 24: Green
It was raining on Greywold, a fine soft rain, and the black field had a green haze across it.
I stood at the fence post where Garrick had once kissed me in the ash and bent down to see.
In the burned dirt, in a row, small green blades were coming up.
They were barley, I thought, from the last of the old seed, left in the ground to see what would happen.
"There," Garrick said behind me. "Since yesterday. I came out at dawn to be sure."
He crouched beside me in the wet, his hair dripping, and touched one blade with the tip of a finger.
It bent and came back up.
"Nan will cry," I said.
"Nan has been crying since the wagons came in."
I looked at him sideways.
He had the look of a man who had slept well and woken happy.
His left hand rested on his knee, grey no longer.
I took it and turned it palm up.
