Chapter 21: The Candles

Armen's POV

The fire cracked, and nobody in the yard spoke.

I stood in the light with my wife's hands around my bare one, and I heard three hundred people waiting.

For six years I had built a voice for this moment, low and slow and heavy, so that no one would ask me a question.

I did not use it.

"She has told you my name," I said. "It is Armen. My brother Vahan drowned in the Kings River in March, six years ago, and my mother and I buried him under mine."

A woman near the front crossed herself.

"I put on his coat so that this Valley would not come apart that week. I kept it on after the week was over. I let you fear a man who was dead, and I am sorry for that."

I looked across the fire at Garo.

"The order at the cold-storage gate three harvests ago was mine. Your son died on it, Mr. Boghosian, and a driver of mine with him. I told you in your kitchen. I say it now in front of the parish, so nobody can say it was somebody else's."
