Chapter 22: After the Fire

Talin's POV

Nobody spoke in the car for the first mile.

Shushan sat in the front seat with her hands folded on her purse.

Armen drove with both of his bare hands on the wheel.

When we turned in at the orchard lane, I saw him look at his right hand and then at his left.

He turned the wheel so gently the car hardly shook.

The kitchen was warm.

Shushan went straight to the stove, as she did every night, and put the kettle on.

Then she sat down in her chair by the window and folded her hands again.

Armen stood in the doorway in his coat.

He did not say anything, and neither did she.

He crossed the floor and knelt in front of her chair on the linoleum.

He rested his hands on his knees, as he must have done when he was a boy.

"Mama," he said. "I'm tired of the coat."

Her face crumpled, and she put out both her hands and held his head.

"Armen jan," she said, quite clearly, in the lamplight of her own kitchen. "My Armen. My son."

He put his forehead against her knee.

I turned away and busied myself with the tea, because there are things a stranger should not watch, even a daughter-in-law.

My father had come to the door behind me, holding the screen with his hip.
