Chapter 11: The Stand
The deer stand was fifteen feet up an oak on Laurel Ridge.
Tate had Judah against its rail before the sun cleared the trees.
Mist lay in the valley below, white and thick, and the whole ridge was grey and gold and silent.
Judah's palms were flat on the splintered wood.
His canvas hunting trousers were around his knees, and his breath smoked in front of him.
"You've done this before," Tate said behind him, and his hands ran down Judah's sides. "Sat up here. Waited."
"With my father. Every November."
"Quiet," Tate said.
"You have to be. They hear a heartbeat."
Tate's mouth touched the back of his neck, just under the lace of the tag.
"Where were you on Fridays?"
Judah went still.
"What?"
"In the blind. Every Friday." Tate's voice was careful. "Were you there?"
"Every one."
The hands on his hips stopped.
For a moment there was only the sound of the leaves, and a crow somewhere out in the mist.
