Chapter 16: The Tag
The water in the basin was warm, and the cloth turned pink as soon as Judah wrung it out.
Tate sat on the edge of the bunk with his back to him and his elbows on his knees.
The new stripes lay over the old ones, and some of them had opened.
Judah washed them one at a time.
He started at the shoulder and went down the spine, slowly, and when Tate flinched he waited and then went on.
The kerosene lamp threw their shadows large and shaky on the log wall.
"You can say it," Tate said into the quiet.
"Say what?"
"That it looks bad."
"It looks bad," Judah said. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I waited."
Tate's shoulders moved.
"You came in the front door."

"After thirty-one Fridays." Tate turned his head, and the swollen eye looked at him in the lamplight.
"I was wrong about you. I thought you watched like everybody watches."
"I did, for a while," Judah said.
"But you came."
"I came."
The cloth stopped.
Judah set it down and laid his palm flat on the unmarked skin at the small of Tate's back.
