Chapter 15: Command
"It's in the safe behind the clock in his study," Imogen said.
She said it fast.
"He's at the Council until noon tomorrow. I can get you the key to the study. I can't get you the combination."
"Soren has the combination."
"Soren has never opened that safe in his life." Her eyes flicked to the door. "Nobody has. But Soren's father used the same number for everything. Try his birthday."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"If this is a trap, I will not be the one who walks into it."
"I know," she said. "That's why I'm telling you."
She put a small iron key in Fenella's palm and left without another word.
I carried the glove back to my room and sat on the bed with it.
I sat there until the clock in the hall struck eleven.
Then I got up, slid back the bolt, and opened my door.
Soren stood in the corridor with one hand raised to knock.
He had been standing there a while, I think.
He lowered the hand.
"You said I couldn't come in unless you opened it," he said.
"I opened it."
"I noticed."
"Come in."
He came in.
He shut the door behind him, very carefully, and left the bolt alone.
He was in his shirtsleeves, with the collar open, and I could smell pine and woodsmoke and the clean cold of the night.
