Chapter 12: Short Four Twelve
I did not sleep.
I sat on the floor of Room 14 with the shoebox in my lap and the time card on my knee.
Halle sat across from me with her back against the bed and her knees drawn up.
"Say it again," Halle said.
"My mother was nineteen," I said.
"She worked a summer at the Kvale feed store, and somebody wrote on her time card that the till was short."
"By who?" Halle said.
"I don't know," I said.
"But I know a hand like that."
I went to my desk drawer.
I took out the incident notice Ragna had made me sign in her office, the one with no author line.
She had let me keep it as my copy.
I laid it on the floor under the lamp, next to the time card.
The pencil on the back of the card was thin and slanted hard to the right.
Every capital *S* was a sharp little hook with a flat tail, and every *R* had a long leg that swung out under the next letter.
I had seen that hand a hundred times and never known to look.
It was on every notice taped to the bulletin board outside the dean's office.
It was in the initials on the form that had slid out of my folder.
It was in the way she wrote *occured.*
Halle leaned over the card and the typed page.
"The page is typed," she said.
"But look at the margin.
"Somebody fixed a typo by hand in blue ink."
I looked.
By the misspelled word, someone had written a tiny neat *r*.
The *r* had a long slanted leg.
"She fixes every typo by hand except that one," Halle said.
"That's so strange."
"She can't see it," I said.
"She's spelled it that way her whole life."
I turned the time card over again and held it up to the lamp.
Then I went to the folder with my tuition papers and pulled out the scholarship letter.
