Chapter 19: Ragna's Vote

Thea's POV

The board of trustees meets on the first Thursday of every month at four o'clock, in the oak-paneled room above the library.

On the first Thursday of December I stood in the corridor outside the door in my mother's coat.

I had not been invited in.

Aksel had been, because his father had put him on the agenda.

I had agreed to wait in the hall for one reason.

A girl the dean had barred from a room was a girl the room would remember.

Halle stood beside me with her arms folded and her phone in her coat pocket.

"Four minutes," she said.

"Did you eat?" she said.

"Crackers," I said.

"That's not food," Halle said.

"It's what I can keep down," I said.

She did not argue.

She took a buttered roll wrapped in a napkin out of her coat and put it in my hand.

I ate it standing in the corridor with my other hand over my mouth.

At four the door opened, and I heard the murmur of nine or ten voices rise.

Then I heard Aksel's carrying, level voice from inside.

"I have a matter for the board," he said.

I put my ear against the oak.

I am not proud of it.

"Mr. Kvale, this is highly irregular," a man said.

"It's a point of order," Aksel said.

"I'm putting a pattern in front of you."
