Chapter 10: Nine Months

I held the phone out so he could read the screen.

Nico sat up in the sheets. His face went still.

"That isn't me," he said. "I never touched your bank."

"The authorization came from your phone."

"Then somebody used it."

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

I got out of bed and pulled on a sweater. My hands were not steady, and I hated that.

"Nico. You promised."

He looked at the wall for a second and then at me.

"I've been texting Bianca for nine months," he said.

The room went quiet.

Even the fig tree had stopped scratching.

"Say that again."

"Nine months. Since last winter. She asked me where you were going after school and who you talked to, and she said it was so you'd be safe."

"And you told her."

"Yes."

"Every day?"

"Most days," Nico said. "I never told her anything that would hurt you. I thought I was helping."

"You drove me to school for three years."

He nodded.

"You watched my mother take my card out of my hand. You watched me ask for a slip to buy a notebook."

"Livia."

"You bought me a gyro and told me to put it in my pocket so nobody saw it," I said. "You were the one person in that house who knew what it was like, and you never said a word to any of them."

My voice cracked.

"Not one word, Nico. Three years. And you promised me you'd never lie."
