Chapter 5: Cousin

Bianca came through the door of suite 312 with a pillow under each arm.

Two guards followed her with her luggage. A third stood in the hallway and looked at every student who walked past.

"Livia!" Bianca dropped the pillows and hugged me hard. "I missed you so much. Aren't you happy?"

I stood still inside her arms.

Over her shoulder I saw Nico in the corner, studying the ceiling.

"You're not enrolled," I said.

"I'm taking classes at the extension school across town," Bianca said, leaning back. "Zio says I need to start somewhere close to you."

"Close to me," I said.

"So we can look out for each other."

She said it exactly the way she had said it at the dinner table.

My phone rang in my pocket. It was my father, and the screen said video.

I answered it and propped the phone on the desk.

My father filled the screen. My mother sat beside him, and behind them I could see our dining room.

"Livia," my father said. "I am letting this go because Nico told me you are safe. Bianca will be next door to you. You will keep her company and she will keep you safe."

"I didn't ask for a roommate."

"She is a Family responsibility," Carmine said. "That was never a request."

My mother leaned toward the camera. "Livia, please. We only want what's best."
