At noon on Saturday the tunnel at Lakewalk Arena was full of people who had never been in it together.
The owner stood at the bottom of the stairs, a heavy grey man in an overcoat, with two lawyers behind him.
Two television crews waited in the corner for the pregame.
Aili stood beside him, five feet tall, glasses on her nose, her braid over her shoulder.
Kasper had come in a hoodie and sunglasses.
Sal stood at the rail in his Hibbing windbreaker with a folded paper in his fist.
Hugo stood at my shoulder.
He didn't touch me.
He didn't have to.
The mark on my neck burned, high and dark and plain.
Harold Hedberg came down the stairs in a navy suit with two security guards.
He was smiling the smile he used at golf outings.
"Buddy," he said to the owner. "I didn't know we were having a party."
"Harold."
"Whatever this is, let's take it upstairs. Before the media."
"Here," the owner said.
