Chapter 23: First Night as Equals
The training room door slammed, and I was already on the table with his mouth on my throat.
He was still in his gear.
The pads were wet with the crowd's beer and his sweat, and the whole room smelled of ice and victory.
The noise of the arena rolled through the walls, eighteen thousand people stamping, and it sounded far away.
"Off," I said, tugging at the jersey. "All of it. Now."
"The skates."
"I'll do them."
I slid off the table and knelt on the rubber mat, in the exact spot where I'd once made him kneel, and unlaced his skates.
I worked the knots loose with my fingers.
I tugged the first boot off and set it aside, and then the second.
He stood over me, barefoot and breathing hard, looking down.
"Vera."
"Shh. Let me."
I stripped him, with practiced hands, but for the first time my hands were shaking.
Shin guards.
Pads.
The jersey, wet and heavy, with no C stitched on the chest anymore.
He had a long, fresh bruise across his ribs and a bright red mark on his collarbone that I'd made and forgotten.
I kissed it.
I kissed his ribs where the bruise was, and his hip where the scar was.
The base of his stomach, and I felt him tremble.
"You scored," I said.
"I scored."
"You pointed at me."
"I'd do it again."
"In front of eighteen thousand people."
"In front of the world."
He tasted of salt and ice and a long hard night.
I opened my mouth under his, and he groaned.
The only thing in the world was the slide of his tongue and the heat coming off his skin.
"Tell me what I did," he muttered into my mouth. "When I shot. Tell me what you saw."
"I saw the puck go in."
"And?"
"And I wanted to bite you in front of everyone."
