Chapter 7: Hibbing
He had snow in his beard and my mouth on his before the bedroom door clicked shut.
We hadn't made it past the stairs.
I'd pulled him up by the wrist.
Halfway up he had backed me against the wall, under a framed school photo of me with braces.
He kissed me until the frame rattled.
His hand was under my sweater.
Mine was inside his jeans.
"Your father's house," he whispered.
"Nobody lives here."
"Your brother's room."
"Keep walking."
He kept walking, with his mouth on my neck and my fingers hooked in his belt.
We passed my brother's old room and my parents' empty one.
My room was at the end of the hall, where the ceiling slanted.
At my door I turned and pushed him against the frame and dragged his zipper down just enough to feel how ready he was.
He dropped his forehead onto my shoulder and made a sound.
"Bedroom," I said.
"Bedroom."
My bedroom since I was six.
A twin bed, a trophy shelf, a lamp with a tilted shade.
"This is a twin," Hugo said against my lips.
"Be quiet."
"I won't fit."
"You'll fit."
I pushed his parka off his shoulders and it hit the rug.
He stood in the middle of the room, breathing hard, looking at the posters, the dusty ribbons, the school photos.
"You grew up here," he said softly.
"Rule one."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry. Undress me."
He did it slowly.
He took off my sweater and my bra.
His knuckles brushed my ribs, and goosebumps ran up my arms.
He knelt to take down my jeans, kissing the inside of my knee as it came free.
When I was bare, he laid me on the quilt and stood over me in the lamplight, just looking.
Then he pulled his sweater off and unbuckled his belt and stepped out of everything.
I saw the bruises on his ribs and the faded print of my teeth on his shoulder.
