Chapter 13: Seventeen Hours
The deputy snapped the second cuff onto my right wrist and turned me toward the door.
"Deputy," Joaquin said.
He had stepped into the gap, and the shouting in the lobby dropped to a growl.
"My name is Joaquin Serrano. You just heard it read aloud. Arrest me."
The deputy looked at him.
"I've got a warrant for her, sir. I've got nothing on you."
"Run my name."
"I ran it at six this morning."
He said it flatly, and his eyes slid for half a second toward the dove-grey suit.
Escamilla examined his cuff link.
I understood then that Escamilla did not want him in custody, and that the deputy was his.
A cell was the one place he would have been safe from Escamilla.
"Take care of my mother," I said to Joaquin, loud enough for the room.
"Ximena."
"Take care of my daughter."
On the stairs Soledad had gone the color of paper, and she held Luz's hand so hard that Luz squeaked.
"Mama, why are the police holding your hands?" Luz asked.
"It's a game, mija," my mother said, in a voice like a closing door. "Come eat."
They walked me out through forty drivers, and not one of them stepped aside until the deputy's hand touched my elbow.
