Chapter 20: Two Easels
"Forty minutes," Philippa said from the foot of the stage. "Same subject, same size, same light. A paper lantern in a window."
A stagehand carried a small clock to the edge of the boards and set it down facing the room.
Two big screens on either side of the wall flickered on.
They showed the easels from behind our shoulders, so three hundred people could watch every stroke.
Blair stood with her palette in her left hand and a long brush in her right.
Her microphone was still clipped to her white collar.
She smiled at me, thin as paper.
"Try to keep up," she said.
"Start whenever you like."
The clock began.
Blair attacked her canvas.
She laid down a violet wash across the whole bottom, bold and fast, and the crowd made a pleased sound.
She sketched a wall in brick-red lines, wide and certain.
She knew every move, and she did it with her chin up and her elbow out.
Anyone would have called it a performance, because that was what it was.
