Chapter 4: House Rules

Yu-ri's POV

Seung-hwan's penthouse in Hannam-dong had two wings and one kitchen no one had ever cooked in.

I remembered every inch of it.

That was the strange part of living a day twice.

My feet knew where the marble was cold.

"Your wing is to the left," he said, standing at the glass wall with his back to me.

"Mine is to the right. The housekeeper comes at ten and leaves at four."

"Thank you," I said.

"At family events, we arrive together and we leave together. In front of others, we are polite and we are seen."

"And in private?" I asked.

"In private we do not touch, and we do not ask each other personal questions."

He turned.

"We do not discuss the arrangement. Is that clear?"

Last time, I had nodded and said yes and spent a year learning how lonely a clear sentence could be.

"I have terms of my own," I said.

His eyebrows moved a fraction.

"You signed."

"I did. And you let me strike clause nine, so I think you'll hear three more."

I took a breath.

"I keep my job at the agency in Mapo. I see my father on Saturdays."

"And no one comes into my wing without my permission, not the housekeeper, not your mother."

"My mother does not need permission to enter my house," he said.

"This is my wing, for two years."

He studied me.

He was handsome in a severe way, with a sharp jaw and no warmth anywhere in the arrangement of it.

I understood him far better now than I had at twenty-six.

He had been taught every day of his life that a person was a position.

The one thing he had never been taught was how to be refused.

"Fine," he said at last.

"Thank you, sunbae," I said.

"Do not call me that," he said. "We are not at a university."
