Chapter 19: Every Share
Mr. Kittredge sat in Weston's study chair with his coat still on and his hat on his knee.
A lawyer stood at his shoulder with a leather folder.
He rose when Eliza and Weston came in, with a courtesy that made her skin crawl.
"Mrs. Schermerhorn. I won't keep you."
"You've kept my house for twenty minutes."
"It's a little early to call it yours."
He nodded to the lawyer, who laid two documents on the desk.
"The first is the note," Mr. Kittredge said. "I'm calling it today. Under the covenant, a change of management lets me do that."
"I wasn't told," Weston said.
"You were told Friday. I'm being generous with the dates."
"What's the second?"
"A way out."
He tapped the page.
"You withdraw your statement to the district attorney. You say you were confused and under pressure. You say your wife agreed to the letter in her own hand and later denied it."
Eliza made a sound.
"In return I tear up the note, put you back in the chair at your company, and my daughter goes somewhere quiet for a long rest."
"Somewhere quiet," Eliza said.
"She isn't well. A trial would finish her."
"She kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach."
"My daughter has suffered more than anyone in this room." His voice stayed pleasant. "You have a son. She has nothing."
"I have a son," Eliza said, "and your daughter and my husband's mother took him from me and called him an orphan."
"Five years," Weston said.
Mr. Kittredge turned his hat once in his hands.
