I sat in the third row, between Ragna and the aisle, in my best wool dress.

On the stage under the old chandeliers sat two candidates behind two tables and a moderator with a clipboard.
Mats was on the left in a dark suit, with a glass of water he had not touched.
Wayne was on the right, in a quilted vest over a pressed shirt, smiling at the cameras.
His wife sat in the front row beside his mother, seven months along, with her hand on her stomach.
His mother turned her head and found me across the rows.
She did not look away.
"Family night," the moderator said. "Let's talk about what makes Duluth a family town."
