Chapter 21: Park Point
The blanket lay in the lee of the dune, and the bonfire glowed orange over the crest, forty yards off.
I could hear Ragna's laugh from the fire, and the crew's guitar, and the long slow wash of the lake on the sand.
The sky over Park Point was still pale at ten at night.
Mats lay on his side facing me with his hand on my hip and his mouth three inches from mine.
"Quiet," he said, very low. "Sound carries here."
"Then you'd better make me quiet."
His eyes went bright.
He kissed me.
It was slow and open and tasted of woodsmoke and the beer he had not finished.
I put my hand on his jaw and kissed him back.
Under my dress, his hand slid up my thigh.
"I want to tell you something," he said, against my lips.
"Tell me."
"I want to tell you what I love about this."
He drew back the hem of my dress, slowly, and pulled it up and over my head, and laid it on the sand.
I lay beside him in the late light in my underwear, with my big belly between us, thirty-four weeks along.
It was round and high and tight, and the new marks silvered across it where it had stretched.
I put my arm over my face.
"Don't," I said.
"Liisa."
"They're new. I don't know what I think of them."
He took my wrist and moved my arm.
"I'll tell you what I think of them," said Mats.
He bent his head and put his mouth against the lowest mark, a thin pale line across the curve below my navel.
He kissed it.
He kissed the next one, and the next, slowly, one at a time, with his big warm hand spread over my side.
"I love this one," he said, to my skin. "And this one. I love every one of them."
