Chapter 22: The Mayor's Desk
City hall was empty at eight o'clock on the last Thursday in July, and the marble stairs went up forever.
I took them one at a time with a hand on the rail.
I was thirty-nine weeks and six days along, and due the next morning.
I had walked half a mile in the heat with a covered dish.
The mayor's office was at the end of the second-floor corridor.
The door stood open, and a lamp burned on the desk.
Mats sat behind it with his tie pulled loose and his sleeves rolled to the elbow, signing a stack of papers one at a time.
A brass plate on the front of the desk said MAYOR in square capitals.
He looked up.
His whole face changed, and he put the pen down.
"You walked," he said, standing.
"I wanted to see your office," I said.
"I would have driven you."
"I wanted to walk."
I put the dish on the corner of the desk.
"Mummo's pulla," I said, "and cold meatballs. You've been here since six. Ragna says you haven't eaten."
"Ragna talks too much."
"She's right."
He came around the desk and took my face in his hands and kissed me.
It was a long, warm, unhurried kiss that tasted of coffee, and I leaned into him as far as the belly allowed.
