Chapter 14: The Boycott
I read the flyer twice.
Then I flipped the grill back on.
"What are you doing?" Abel said.
"Making stew."
"It's five-thirty in the morning."
"Stew takes four hours. I've got four hill packs to feed before she does."
The waitress popped her gum back in.
"Boss is going on tour."
"Boss is going on tour," I said. "You're running the counter."
"I want a raise."
"You want a wage first."
Abel was already reaching for his keys.
"I'll drive."
"You have a pack."
"My pack's on your list."
We started with the Wilder hall, because it was a mile up the road and his aunt was standing in the door with her cane.
She read the flyer.
She tore it in half, then in quarters.
"Construction jobs," she said. "My husband poured the foundation for that lodge in 1971. They paid him in venison."
"So you're coming."
"I gave you my kitchen, girl. I'm not giving it to her."
The old woman in the barn coat was next, an hour up a gravel spur.
She met us on her porch with a shotgun across her knees, though she was only shelling peas.
